IEBC CHAIRMAN WAFULA CHEBUKATI STORMS OUT OF A MEETING LEAVING THE OTHER COMMISSIONERS IN SHOCK

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati reportedly stormed out of a meeting with other commissioners after a serious disagreement.

Chebukati was chairing a general meeting of the Commission at their Anniversary Towers offices to resolve the impact of Raila Odinga’s withdrawal from the October 26 poll.

After lengthy bargaining, he excused himself and asked the CEO Ezra Chiloba to summarise the meeting and communicate to the country.

According to The Standard, reports emerged that the gazettement of presidential candidates failed to be effected after Chebukati refused to sign it.

Reports indicate that Mr Chebukati proposed to change the election date from October 26th but the other six commissioners rejected it.

Chebukati pinned his argument on Odinga’s move to withdraw from the election. The 2013 Supreme Court ruling opined that if one candidate withdraws or dies before elections, IEBC should organize fresh polls in 90 days.

He was, however, disputed by the commissioners claiming that his approach could not hold because Odinga’s withdrawal was erratic. Mr Odinga had not signed form 24A before announcing his pull out from the repeat presidential election.
